Dallas Business Headshot with Attention To Lighting
Here's an example of the power of precision lighting to save an otherwise mediocre Dallas business headshot.
Business Headshots with CORRECT LIGHTING to go with your pose, wardrobe and smile! |
A truly professional headshot has to bring all the elements together for success: specifically the lighting, the pose, and the retouching. In this gblog post we're talking about lighting.
Today's example shows a simple and straightforward headshot, but one that must be done exactly right in order to not be less than it should be. The background is simple. The wardrobe is simple. All the focus is on the face - right where it should be.
The pose is great, but the issue is in the lighting. The photo on the left shows the lighting too much to one side. This creates several problems that are not immediately obvious to an untrained eye.
First, the more the lighting is to the side, the more that texture is emphasized. That is GREAT if you are taking a portrait of an old person where you want every wrinkle to show like it is some person in a National Geographic Magazine. But it is AWFUL for a contemporary business headshot,
We FIXED this broken headshot on the left by simple moving the light 2.5 feet towards the center. The light is more centered, but not completely straight on. Put the light too straight on and the face will look too flat. Put the lights too off to the sides and the face will look too textured.
This lighting correction fixed a couple important things: it naturally lessened the SMILE LINES, You see more face, instead of more shadows.
If you can't see or don't care about this difference, then you're not a good match to be my client. I am about showing you at your best. I am about attention to detail. I am about maximizing your impact.
Second, lighting too off to the side creates shadows on either side of the bridge of the nose. This results in your eyes looking as if they are deeply set into your face, a harrowed and more gaunt type look, but a good look.
As your face is central to your headshot, your eyes are central to your face - the most important part. Ugly shadows on and near your eyes are the WORST thing you can do to your face. Don't let some AMATEUR photographer get away with pawning off this kind of mediocre look to undermine your career connections.
Moving the light to the exact right angle restores how your eyes should look - SO much better on the right! No more offputting murkiness where your face is! More radiant and welcoming!
Moreover the too side lighting makes the entire face look heavier, wider. Correct the detail and precision ange of the lights and they look 10 lbs lighter! It is just amazing what truly professional light positioning can do for your image.
As a Dallas businessperson, you want to be received with respect and trust - not present yourself as someone who does not CARE about results.
